Funding for education has been cut down and regional differences in the way education is arranged have increased in Finland. OAJ has recently published propositions to secure equality in education also in future.
Finland has, for a long time, been considered a model country in terms of equality in education. Top results in learning comparisons, the world’s best teachers and free education have positioned us on the world map. However, can we count on these in the future, too, when signs of decay can already be seen?
Funding for education has been cut down and regional differences in the way education is arranged have increased. The background of individuals can strongly be seen in the way they will succeed at school and the level of education they will reach. Teachers are challenged to respond to different needs and wishes and to offer everyone an equal basis for aspiring towards personal goals and dreams. The quality of education services must not depend on the place of living, language or socioeconomic or sociocultural background of the family. The purpose of education is to pave the way for everybody.
Signposts must already be chosen today in order to ensure that the Finnish education system will also be equal in the future. The Trade Union of Education in Finland OAJ has prepared a roadmap that marks out the way to the future and provides a foundation for joint discussion.
